Should you exercise after a massage?

Massage and exercise are both part of a healthy lifestyle

After a massage, it is important to wait at least 24 hours before doing any strenuous exercise. Strenuous exercise includes running, weight lifting, high-intensity aerobics, power yoga and more. Light exercise, such as moderate walking, gentle stretching or easy-paced swimming, are okay for most healthy individuals after their massage.

One view in favor of this recovery period is that sustained pressure on connective tissue, as during massage, makes it softer. This softening lasts about 24 hours, so strenuous exercise may pull or move the tissue and cause more pain or discomfort.

Some healthy people who are used to a regular workout routine may find it difficult to postpone exercise. If that applies to you, we recommend fitting in your workout before your massage and then relaxing afterward.

One goal of a massage is to reduce tension and soreness, so it is wise to let the massage do its work without stressing it further with strenuous activity. Massage can be part of your healthy routine as you learn to embrace the relaxation and rejuvenation it brings your body – which creates a nice counterbalance for the challenge and exertion it experiences during athletic activity.
